A handful of individuals were asked to write about their experiences at Heritage Oaks Church. This is #4 and the final part of a series that shares others’ perspectives of the church.
Before attending Heritage Oaks Nazarene Church for the first time in September, we had been to multiple churches in town. It was always my idea to go somewhere else, hoping it would be better. I hadn’t been to any church for over a year, as my husband went to church alone.
A friend invited me, and we (husband and I) went together on a Wednesday night, on a “Be the church” night. We went to Canoe Brooke Assisted Living Facility to sing hymns with some of the residents, visit with them, and show the love of God. I thought this was a great idea, being the hands and feet of Jesus.
We came back on Sunday and were greeted by name by the pastor and his wife. They were both so friendly, genuine, and personable. We both felt welcome and accepted immediately. When I read ”Welcome Home” on the bulletin, I nodded my head in agreement.
As an introvert, I’ve always avoided crowds (more than 2 or 3) of any kind. Since attending Heritage Oaks, there have been several firsts for me: playing Bunco, going to lunch with a group (twice), singing in the worship team (once), and volunteering to help. I feel very comfortable and accepted here. I see that the people in the church have real concern for others, and prayer is a vital part of their lives.
Romans 15:7 says, “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God”. This verse could be the church motto. Now, instead of avoiding church, I look forward to going and am willing to step out of my comfort zone.
